Fjord (Palme d’Or), Minotaur (Grand Prix), and The Dreamed Adventure (Jury Prize) were among the top winners at the 2026 – 79th Cannes Film Festival winners

The 79th Cannes Film Festival has officially come to a close, with this year’s jury delivering several surprise wins that few predicted heading into the awards ceremony.

Fjord claimed the Palme d’Or, marking Cristian Mungiu’s second career Palme d’Or victory and continuing one of the most remarkable streaks in modern awards-season history, with NEON securing the festival’s top prize for the seventh consecutive year.

As always, Cannes immediately reshapes the awards conversation. Some winners will become major players throughout the international film season, while others could emerge as serious contenders in the Oscar race – especially in categories like Best Picture, International Feature, Director, and Screenplay.

The festival also continued one of the most remarkable streaks in modern awards-season history, with NEON securing the Palme d’Or winner for the seventh consecutive year.

Now comes the real question: which of these Cannes winners will actually survive the long road to Oscar season?

Every year, Cannes launches a handful of major contenders yet only a select few manage to carry that momentum all the way to the Academy Awards. Last year, It was Just an Accident peaked early, while others like Secret Agent slowly build into Best Picture threats by the fall.

I’ll be tracking the awards trajectory of these Cannes winners throughout the season as the Oscar race begins to take shape.
